The Anglo-Saxon time period was an era full of storytelling and lyrical poems. Storytellers developed an oral tradition during this period as they memorized, adapted, and passed along stories and songs. Many of the Anglo-Saxon stories were epics, which are long poems that tell a story of a heroic deed or a legendary event from the past. These epics invariably included an epic hero, or a larger-than-life figure that presented their courage, virtue, and skill against an evil or opposing figure. In addition to the epic hero, the Anglo-Saxon’s incorporated their values into the epics. By incorporating these into the songs, they were able to teach not only their values, but also life lessons to the audience. A prominent Anglo-Saxon epic is the song, Beowulf. In the song, protagonist, Beowulf battles the following three evil forces: Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. In all three of these battles, Beowulf manifests many of the values of the Anglo-Saxon’s such as loyalty, bravery, and strength. The Seafarer is an Old English poem giving a first-person account of a man alone on the sea. The poem consists of 124 lines, followed by the single word Amen and is recorded only in the Exeter Book, one of the four surviving manuscripts of Old English poetry. It has most often been categorised as an elegy, a poetic genre common in Old English.
